Community Garden
The Burleigh Triangle is one of the community gardens maintained by the Bedford Garden Club. The Burleigh Triangle is a median island located at the intersection of Ministerial Road and Bedford Center Road. It was named for the piece of land belonging to Mr. John Burleigh, a long time resident of Bedford. Mr. Burleigh provided the electricity for the original lamppost by a wire running under the road to his property. Although road construction and reconfiguration has changed the size of the garden, the triangular shape has remained. In 2005, the Rotary Club of Bedford donated a clock to the town to honor their centennial. Originally this clock was in front of Bedford’s historic Town Hall, but was relocated to the Burleigh Triangle when the town reconfigured Bedford Center’s traffic pattern.
The garden features a collection of perennials and shrubs along with an old granite water trough and two granite boulders. Years ago, the old granite water trough was donated to the town by “Pinky” Jane Nelson, a Bedford resident and a longtime friend of the late Jean Tallman, Past President of BGC. Pinky moved to North Manchester and found the trough buried in her backyard. She had it dug up and placed at the Burleigh Triangle. The two large granite rocks were obtained from the construction site of the Bedford High School. The rocks provide a background for the shrubs and flowers.
